As the Brazis Valley grows, court dockets become backlogged. It’s not a new problem, but Sophia Ridley tonight tells us why the BCS Chamber of Commerce is asking lawmakers in Washington to help establish a new federal court here at home. If you’ve ever received a federal jury summon or been involved in a federal case, you probably had to travel to Waco or Houston. The BCS Chamber of Commerce wants to change that. The same applies to our businesses, our attorneys, our witnesses.
Anytime we’re in federal court, Brazes County residents are spending hours commuting back and forth to Houston. Local attorney Shane Phelps agrees with the chamber, but he says establishing a federal court in the Brazes Valley has been a decadesl long battle. I think we have enough cases that are um federally susceptible uh in Braz County to support a federal court and we have a number of counties all around um that that I think would also contribute to that. So I I definitely think there’s a need for it. Phelps is a criminal defense lawyer, but there are many types of cases that rely on federal courts.
You’re going to find a lot of business cases in federal court and so having one in Brian College Station would make our community more businessfriendly. Anytime you have an outofstate party, you’re always going to end up in federal court. Cases regarding intellectual property, bankruptcy, immigration, they are all required to be heard in federal court. A federal court must be established by Congress. The delegation spoke to lawmakers, including Senator John Cornin, about it this morning.
