Tony Romo parts with CBS Sports after nine years

CBS Sports and former NFL quarterback Tony Romo have mutually agreed to part ways after nine years together. The announcement, made on Friday, October 2, 2026, follows Romo’s July arrest in Milwaukee for operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI). Romo, who was previously placed on indefinite leave, had pleaded no contest to the charges in September. Former NFL star J.J. Watt will continue to serve as the network’s lead game analyst alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson for the remainder of the season.

The Arrest & Legal Status: Romo was pulled over by police in Milwaukee on July 23, 2026, after leaving a Wisconsin golf course. Officers noted a strong odor of alcohol, and Romo performed poorly on field sobriety tests. On September 1, he pleaded no contest to the OWI charge, resulting in a six-month driver’s license revocation, a fine, and a mandate to install an ignition interlock device.

Romo’s Statement: In statements shared after his plea and departure, Romo explained that constant pain stemming from multiple back surgeries during his Dallas Cowboys career led to an over-reliance on pain medication, which eventually transitioned into an over-reliance on alcohol. He emphasized that he takes full responsibility for his failures and plans to take a break to focus on his family and health.
