Driver killed in Sunnyside shootout, HPD says

New at 10, dramatic video captures a late morning shootout that police say left a man in this car dead. It happened on Camal near Redbud in the Sunnyside neighborhood around the same time a home nearby was burglarized. ABC13 Shannon Ryan joins us live at HPD headquarters to explain what all happened in this case. >> Erica, really an odd series of events. And at this point, Houston police, they tell us nobody is in custody for either crime.

>> Shortly before 11 this morning, >> I woke up. I opened up my garage and I noticed black shoes and black pants. And then it gets up high and it’s police HPD in my front yard. >> Brian Shannon says he woke up to a body and car in his sunnyside front yard. >> I noticed the white sheep pulling up.

Police say the driver crashed here after he was fatally shot at the intersection of Red Bud and Canal Street just a few feet from Shannon’s home. >> There’s several bullet holes in the vehicle. >> A neighbor’s surveillance cameras captured the Cadillac pull up to the intersection and stop. You see a man carrying at least one bag walk up to the driver’s side window >> and they start they start shooting at each other. The man on foot drops the bag and runs out of frame as the driver crashes in Shannon’s yard and dies.

And >> they did something they going to regret cuz now one is breathing. The other one’s on the one the other one’s at the m. >> Moments later, cameras capture at least two vehicles stop over the back. As a second pulls off, it disappears. >> Then I see another lost soul.

>> This all happened around the same time neighbors on the next block tell us their empty home was broken into. saying the burglar or burglars cut their power, disabling surveillance cameras, threw a brick through a window, ransacked their home, and left electronics and black clothing in their backyard as one of the residents pulled into their driveway. They say they watched a man with a bag ride off on a bicycle stolen from their garage. And again, Houston police do confirm that they are looking into that burglary, but at this time they’re unable to say whether or not the two crimes are connected. If you know anything about either, the department is asking you contact them.
