Driver dead after tanker truck fire in SW Houston

Well, this morning the scene is now clear following a fire and a deadly accident. A crash involving a tanker truck. It caused businesses to be evacuated in multiple lanes to be shut down. That crash happened just before 9:30 yesterday morning in the US 90 alternate westbound lane at Bondrin. An 18wheeler filled tanker carrying more than 8,000 gallons of gasoline crashed into the median causing an explosion.

No other vehicle was involved, but the southbound lanes of 90 at Fondrin remained closed throughout the day and night and nearby trains were also stopped. The driver tragically died at the scene. Police in people rather inside of a hair salon just across the street tell us they felt multiple impacts and then the lights went out. They looked outside and they saw black smoke and fire coming out of the drainage grates filling the service road and parking lot. There was a a big fire over on the right side and we were told uh by the officer that we had to evacuate.

But we work very hard on Saturdays. That’s one of our busiest days and just to experience blowing uh the fuel. I know you can smell it. Um and all of the toxic things that are right now. Y’all felt just one impact or No, it was about three times.

We could feel it like an explosion. Very scary situation. We have learned all the businesses have been allowed to return, but one firefighter who was at the scene helping was transferred to the hospital for heat exposure. We are told he is expected to be
