Welcome to Fox News at nine. I’m Lina deFlorias in for Tom Zizka now. Texas House Democrats are still out of state blocking a vote on redrawing Texas’s congressional district map. That could give Republicans an advantage in five Texas districts in the U.S.
House. On Saturday morning, Congressman Al Green hosted the fourth annual Slavery Remembrance Legislative Update Breakfast. He was joined by State Representative Ron Reynolds, who was one of the dozens of Texas House Democrats who broke quorum during Governor Abbott’s first special session. Here’s a little bit of what he had to say this morning. And here we are in 2025, in the state of Texas is trying to turn back the clocks with this racial gerrymandering.
They’re trying to take out our very own Congressman, Al Green.
And I hope that you all will agree. Not on our watch. We’re not going to let them take us back. We’re not going to let them turn us around.
It is important that we speak truth to power, and that we fight in the spirit of our ancestors, whose shoulders we stand on today. My call to action to you all. We took a stand by breaking quorum, and it is incumbent upon us all to make sure that we’re registering voters, that we’re mobilizing everybody from the streets to the streets, and make sure that we vote all the way down to the ballot. Well, protests in Texas today were part of nationwide protests against President Trump’s administration and policies. At Fox 26 is Leslie Delasbour shows us some of the demonstrations here in our area.
Saturday there were multiple fight the Trump takeover rallies in Houston.
Community members and political leaders were speaking out about the redrawing of district 18, including Black Voters Matter, who says even though they were small in numbers, coming together makes a large impact. Local organizers got together in conjunction with a lot of other organizations nationally to host a National Day of Action rally today to fight back against mid decade redistricting plans and its harmful impact on our communities. We feel as though we have a responsibility to stand up to one, educate the city on what’s happening, and then two start to assemble to decide what we’re going to do next. Kind of shake your head and thinking that it’s a nightmare when it’s happening in real life and, you know, at a fast pace.
If this impacts our lives, it has an impact of our livelihoods. No matter on what side you are. From 9 to 11 this morning, other demonstrators in Kingwood were also protesting the redrawing of district 18. They said the fight started in Texas, but it doesn’t end here. The Texas vote.
We are protesting Trump’s influence in state politics. The gerrymandering specifically of the Texas voters. We don’t want it. Trump shouldn’t be involved in it. Abbott shouldn’t be taking care of Trump’s business.
It is anti-American. Full stop. What else can you do? Why am I on the street? It’s all I can do.
Make noise. It’s not okay if we just sit back and we don’t do anything, we’re done. We’re toast. Also in Austin, our Fox seven affiliate covered multiple fight the Trump takeover rallies in that area. Take a look.
Stronger protesters gathered in cities nationwide Saturday to demonstrate against President Trump’s policies. We fight back. We’re going to keep fighting these maps, and we’re going to carry that fight through November, when we’re going to make sure that no matter how they draw those lines, we’re going to send the Trumps and the Abbott’s and the Paxton’s to the dustbin of history where they belong.
Demonstrators focusing on Republican plans to redraw congressional maps. It’s a move designed to give the GOP five more House seats.
President Trump has backed the plan, which could hand Republicans a major advantage in next year’s midterm elections. In response, Texas Democratic lawmakers left the state, blocking the quorum needed to bring the proposal to a vote. They’re threatening to arrest us. They’re threatening to bankrupt us. They’re threatening to imprison us because they’re scared.
They’re panicking because they realize that if they’re unable to win the 2026 elections, and that’s why they’re trying to steal these five seats in Texas. The Texas Democrats ran to states that had already redrawn their voting maps to reduce Republican chances at the ballot box in those states on Friday, with five members short of making quorum, the special session ended. Governor Abbott, shortly after calling a second special session with similar agenda items ranging from flood relief funding to, of course, congressional redistricting.
Every strategy is at play depends on when and whether the Democrats show up. You know, they they talk as though they’re going to be showing up today or tomorrow.
We’ll wait and see. But we hold a lot more bullets in our belt that we will be ready to use if we need to. Governor Abbott saying in part, quote, delinquent House Democrats ran away from their responsibility to pass crucial legislation to benefit the lives of Texans because of their dereliction of duty. Texas families and communities impacted by the catastrophic 4th of July flooding have been delayed. Critical resources for relief and recovery.
He says numerous other bills have been brought to a halt because of the Democrats refusing to show up to work. Another day, another dollar, as they say, thousands of dollars that are not going to flood victims and the people that need.
