numbers over on our website, fox26houston.com. If you want to read more about them. Will he or will he not? That is the looming question regarding Governor Greg Abbott’s potential veto of a statewide ban on the sale of products containing THC.
Fox 46 political reporter Greg Groogan has been working his sources. Joining us live now with some insight. What did you find out, Greg? Rashi and Caroline. Literally millions of Texans are waiting on the governor’s decision, and frankly, he’s not showing anybody his cards.
Now, advocates of the ban say the proliferation of largely unregulated THC sales has made Texas government party to addiction, poisonings, mental breakdowns and even suicides, all triggered by the intoxicating drugs. Opponents of a total ban say better to start from scratch and strictly regulate THC products, rather than drive millions of customers onto the criminal black market, writes political analyst Mark Jones. Has been handicapping political options for decades and says when it comes to THC, Governor Abbott is stuck between a rock and a hard place. Somebody off, regardless of what he does, right? As you mentioned, the governor is in a no win position here.
If he vetoes the legislation, he upsets Dan Patrick as well as many conservatives. On the other hand, if he signs it in to law or lets it go through, he’s going to upset all these business owners who have invested hundreds of millions of dollars as well as some veterans groups. You’re counselor to the governor right now, which is the option which poses the least risk. I think the least risk for the governor is simply not to sign the bill and let it go into law. That way, he signals to people who oppose it that he isn’t a strong supporter of the legislation, but he also signals to people who support the bill that he doesn’t oppose it so much that he’s going to veto it.
Governor Abbott has until midnight Sunday to make his call. Life or death for an $8 billion. Currently legal.
