This morning, the woman charged with allegedly performing illegal abortions and practicing medicine without a license expected to make her first court appearance in Waller County. 49 year old Maria Rojas is currently being sued by the Texas Attorney General’s office. Now the AG also ordered her three Houston area clinics to be shut down. One of those clinics is in Waller. Our Devon Romming joins us live this morning from the Waller County Courthouse.
So Devon, what else are you learning about those charges? Well, Steph and Sherman, good morning.
Rojas is expected to appear here in Waller County, according to her attorney on civil charges, not the criminal charges in this case, against her. Now she’s been charged with 2 counts of prohibited dismemberment abortion and 2 counts of practicing medicine in violation of subtitle, meaning without a license. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced the arrest of Rojas last week.
Which comes after Texas passed a near total ban on the procedure back in 2022. Now AG Paxton also filed a lawsuit against Rojas, and according to the lawsuit, the three clinics she owns were located in Spring, Cyprus, and a third one here in Waller. Court documents reveal an anonymous tip in January prompted a month-long investigation, including surveillance of the three clinics. And investigators also went through trash bags looking for evidence. Now, a woman who Rojas used to work for told CBS News she was a midwife in her clinic for 8 years, and she’s shocked to hear about the allegations against her.
Midwives don’t do that period. It’s not what we do so it’s the opposite we’re bringing life into the world with delivering babies so and.
She’s never ever talked about anything like that. Rojas’s defense attorney sent us a statement saying in part that her client is being subjected to a campaign of sensationalism and politicization. She went on to say, we are confident that a fair and thorough investigation will reveal the truth and exonerate M.
Client, we ask that the media and the public allow this process to occur without further fueling the flames of sensationalism. Meanwhile, Rojas is set to appear at 9 o’clock this morning in Waller County, Devon Romming, KHOU 11 News..
